Tinted Ravens

A book of paintings by Dr. Venetta Whitaker.

To be an artist is to have a story to tell. According to Annette Simmons, “To live in this world with purpose and meaning, we must tell ourselves some story of vision that gives our struggle meaning.” Every artist is guided by one or more strong commitments. It may simply be to convey visually lovely pictures, to call attention to injustices, to portray religious truths or to chronicle the lives and commonality of all humanity.

As an African American woman, Dr. Venetta Whitaker subscribes to the belief that people endeavor to be acknowledged. No single group can claim ownership of beauty or universal truth. A number of images in Tinted Ravens focus attention on women and people of color. Whitaker’s work gives prominence to people worldwide of different lifestyles with whom she has shared moments of tenderness, laughter, tears, and hope.

The book includes an array of paintings, quotes, affirmations, reflections, poems, inspirational pathways, and opinion pieces. Hopefully, viewers will study the paintings, and read the collection of inspirational messages with intensity and passion. Feasibly, they will set off on a soul-searching mission ready to use every aspect of their humanity to fully express their creativity.
