Jansen is a Gulf War veteran — his art includes visual commentary on the ills of war.

Jansen is a painter and mixed-media artist who brings a very global perspective to his work. He is influenced by graffiti artists or ‘writers’ in New York City. You can see this influence in his large, bright images which sometimes include text. Additionally, his work is a form of expressionism.

His work generates an emotional reaction in viewers. It takes observers many visits to view his work and to completely recognize the messages he is conveying. We were keen to include Marcus in this month’s edition because his work is very of-the-moment, focusing on today’s socio-economic and political climate.

Marcus Jansen – One of the Most Important American Painters of Our Time. The pioneer of what has been called “Urban Expressionism.”

Jansen’s career has skyrocketed in the last twenty-plus years ago. His work is held in major collections across the world including the Bronx Museum of the Arts, Moscow Museum of Modern Art (MMOMA), the University of Michigan Museum of Art, the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Art, and the Rollins Museum of Art.
