With the preponderance of evidence showing the positive impact of the fine arts on people, it is baffling that our society does not invest more in creative institutions.
Art can have a strong, positive impact on an individual’s quality of life. A national study of 25,000 middle and high school students showed that students involved in the fine arts scored much better on standardized tests than their peers. Additionally, art-educated students watch less TV, are better problem solvers, are more innovative, and are less likely to be bored in school.
At the other end of the spectrum, gerontologists and psychologists are doing groundbreaking research into how participation in arts activities (including passive participation) improves cognitive function, memory, self-esteem, and the well-being of aging adults. Results indicate that listening to music or playing an instrument reduces behavioral symptoms associated with dementia. Stress, aggression, agitation, and apathy each improve when seniors listen to music, sing, or dance.
