Remembering Radcliffe Bailey

Radcliffe Bailey’s prolific work developed unique narratives of the African American experience. Bailey died of brain cancer on November 15, 2023, just 10 days before his 55th birthday.

Bailey’s sculptural assemblages and paintings explore Black Americans’ past, present, and future using existing images and objects, including tintypes from his family’s collection, Georgia red clay, and African figurines.

Jewelry is Art

Jewelry is Art

HAVarts board member, Ms. Biljana Stewart, is a very accomplished and highly skilled jewelry designer.

Biljana's original pieces are created from classic materials — silver is paired with pearls and/or an endless variety of semi-precious gemstones. Her company, Biba Design LLC, was founded in 2007. Today her company markets several collections of high-quality designer jewelry to a growing number of fine jewelry retailers.

Biljana accepts custom commissions when possible, as well as offering a range of customized jewelry workshops for individuals who want to learn the techniques of jewelry design.

Afrofuturist Period Room at The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Afrofuturist Period Room at The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Afrofuturism Installation at the Metropolitan Museum of Art

"Before Yesterday We Could Fly: An Afrofuturist Period Room" is a fabrication of a domestic space that assembles furnishings and objects to create a fiction of authenticity.

Rather than affirm a fixed moment in time, this structure reimagines the immersive experience of the period room by embracing the African diasporic belief that the past, present, and future are interconnected.

The narrative of this exhibition is generated by the history of Seneca Village, a vibrant community founded predominantly by free Black tenants and landowners that flourished from the 1820s to the 1850s just a few hundred yards west of The Met. In 1857, the City of New York destroyed Seneca Village for the construction of Central Park.

Acknowledging that injustice, the exhibition asks: What if this community had the opportunity to grow and thrive?

Victory for the Arts

Victory for the Arts

There were two attempts to eliminate federal funding for the arts and humanities in the U.S. House of Representatives this session and both were defeated!

On November 2, the House passed the Fiscal Year 2024 Department of the Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act, H.R. 4821. During the session, amendments were proposed to cut funding for the National Endowment for the Arts (Amendment 60) and the National Endowment for the Humanities (Amendment 61). Both were voted down.

Established by Congress in 1965, the National Endowment for the Arts is the largest funder of the arts and arts education in communities nationwide. By advancing equitable opportunities for arts participation and practice, the NEA fosters and sustains an environment in which the arts benefit everyone in the United States.

December 2023 Black Art Auction

Featuring works by Charly Palmer and Lawrence Philp.

In 2020, Time magazine commissioned artist Charly Palmer to create a portrait of the impact of racial injustice. The resulting 40 x 30 inch painting of a little girl faced with the injustice of today and America’s historical role in it is titled "In Her Eyes."

Lawrence Philp painted "Yoruba" as a commemoration of the film Black Orpheus, a 1959 romantic tragedy directed by French filmmaker Marcel Camus. The painting illustrates the scene where the protagonist goes to a Candomblé ceremony and Eurydice speaks to him through a practitioner.
