Greetings from the HAVarts Director
Students entering a museum

With the preponderance of evidence showing the positive impact of the fine arts on people, it is baffling to me that our society does not invest more in creative institutions.

Art can have a strong, positive impact on an individual’s quality of life. A national study of 25,000 middle and high school students showed that students involved in the fine arts scored much better on standardized tests than their peers. Additionally, art-educated students watch less TV, are better problem solvers, are more innovative, and are less likely to be bored in school.

At the other end of the spectrum, gerontologists and psychologists are doing groundbreaking research into how participation in arts activities (including passive participation) improves cognitive function, memory, self-esteem, and the well-being of aging adults. Results indicate that listening to music or playing an instrument reduces behavioral symptoms associated with dementia. Stress, aggression, agitation, and apathy improve when seniors listen to music, sing, or dance.

Has Culture Come to a Standstill?

A recent editorial in the New York Times opined that Culture has come to a standstill.

“We are now almost a quarter of the way through what looks likely to go down in history as the least innovative, least transformative, least pioneering century for culture since the invention of the printing press."

As long as there are ways to view art, play instruments, take classes, educate our youth, engage our elders, and become involved with creative mediums, HAVarts will work to optimize these opportunities.

Ten Commandments of Art

By Dr. Venetta Whitaker

Art has profound healing and therapeutic powers. I believe that we all are artists whether or not we choose to express our God – given creative powers to draw paint, play, garden, write, creative poetry, dance, or sing
.

Art is a corrective event that presents us with the opportunity to repair the traumas of past experience, develop new relationships with our inner selves and community in ways that go beyond the limits of words.
